Children’s Council

The Children’s Council at SickKids is an advisory group of patients and siblings, ranging from 12 to 17 years of age, who work together to make SickKids a better place. The Patient and Family Experience Strategy was designed with input from Children’s Council members, anchoring the tenets of the strategy in the lived experience of SickKids patients and family members. The members feel that this strategy encourages unity, dignity, transparency, community, and commitment and are excited to continue to share their experiences with the SickKids community.

Sophie, 15

Hi! My name is Sophie and I have been being treated at SickKids hospital since I was five years old. Outside of my hospital experience, I love science and math, as well as being creative! I love being around animals and working with them, and some things that mean the most to me are my family and friends. Volunteering at the hospital has been an amazing experience and I enjoy my time helping, collaborating with other council members, and always learning something new!

Hartley, 15

I’ve been a patient at SickKids since I was one day old, and I’ve been volunteering for the hospital as an ambassador since I was five years old. When I was nine, I joined SickKids Children’s Council and I’ve worked on various advisory committees within the hospital helping with many different initiatives.

Jaya, 17

My name is Jaya and I’m a Grade 11 student living in Toronto. I’ve been treated at SickKids and before that, I lived in Chicago! At school, I’m a House Head, play various sports and conduct/am a member of the choir. My favourite subjects are chemistry and biology. Outside of school, I love to volunteer to help others (like I do on the Children’s Council!).

Emma , 17

I am a 17 year-old girl who loves fashion, volleyball, and reading. SickKids is a huge part of my identity as I spent quite some time here as a patient. I love being part of the Children’s Council and I’m so proud of all the changes we’ve helped make.

Mia , 17

I love drawing, drumming and writing. I’m also kind of a nerd when it comes to shows and movies. Making people smile and feel good about themselves is something I love to do.

Colm , 14

A frequent flyer of the hospital, I like to think I keep the blueprints of SickKids in my brain and the staff in my heart. While I don’t define myself by illness, I do feel proud to have SickKids be part of my journey.

Gabriella , 17

When I’m not busy with school or work, I enjoy reading, long hikes with my dogs, and baking!

Elayna , 13

Hi, I’m Elayna! I live in Ajax, Ontario, with my parents and two dogs, and I’m part of the SickKids Children’s Council. I’m a competitive swimmer and love spending time outdoors.

Lily , 18

I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when I was 14 and I spent a lot of time at SickKids recovering. I am proud to be a member of the SickKids Children’s Council and I feel privileged to be able to make decisions that help patients like me.

Ping , 17

I have been going to SickKids for just over 15 years. During those years I have gained more than five bravery bead necklaces. Those beads represent every surgery, clinic, poke, test, etc. My experience has been very broad, with many doctors, nurses and staff, but has been great!

Carmen, 16

I am a proud member of the SickKids Children’s Council. I love football, my Nonna’s cooking and hanging out with my friends. SickKids diagnosed me with narcolepsy at seven years old and has been treating it every since.
